For many months now I have been walking around with a clear understanding that I have always had issues with money. I used to believe that I was the one that needed to change to fit our mainstream economic model. Recently my awareness shifted to allow me to ask myself “What if it is the system that needs to shift?” As I allowed this question to speak to me and did my best to clean my slate of many long held beliefs and perceptions I realized that:
- I have never been at ease with hierarchical systems and I prefer more cooperative ones
- I feel like the square peg trying to fit itself into the round hole to meet most traditional exchange of money energy ways
- I feel more centred and joyful when I work with and within cooperative systems
Throughout my lifetime I have worked to squeeze my square peggedness into our current round hole economic system and now it is time for me to work with a system that is more in alignment with who I am and what I believe. I have spent the last few months opening to this idea, discussing it with others, researching some of the details, and then integrating all of this information and making some decisions. I don’t even want to call this new-to-me way an economic system – I prefer to call it an energy exchange system, until I come up with a better name. Most of the ways of my new system are not new, many have been around for quite some time, but it is new for me to fully embrace them and put them together in a way that works for me and those who want to work with me.
Sliding scales, time banking, cooperative agreements and donations are the roots of my energy exchange system. I first saw the sliding scale system that is a favourite of mine in 2000 at a unique planet-loving, hemp-loaded retail store called Still Eagle (say it fast 3 times over and you will get the double meaning!) in Nelson, B.C. http://www.stilleagle.com/our_story.html Every item in the store had a maximum and a minimum price and buyers purchased items at the price that worked best for them. I hope that this idea will become the way in many other retail stores. Time banking systems have been active in some communities for many years now http://www.timebanks.org/ Within these systems an hour of one person’s time is worth an hour of another’s regardless of what skills are exchanged. Cooperative agreements leave room for creative ways for individuals to develop win-win ways and donations keep doors open for others who don’t fit into other categories.
So for now, here is how I am offering my services to the community and beyond. I may have to adjust things here and there and I will work with individuals on a case by case basis.
